I have similar questions. I came across this schematic to control a 90v dc motor. I know it is not ideal but for basic speed control? Any thoughts?

In the case you show, it will be an effective speed control. The AC becomes pulsating DC, so the SCR will turn off each cycle. This is a very different case form operating from batteries.
