If you feed them a DC level that is within the clipping/clamping range, it will have virtually no effect on the output signal. However, if the input DC level goes outside the clamp/clip range, the output won't go past the limits.
We make a small voltmeter for Schlumberger that is capable of resolving millivolt levels of DC and AC, yet can be directly plugged in to a 120VAC wall socket and not be damaged.
We use two high wattage, back to back, 12 volt zener diodes, to "clamp" the input to the meter at 12 volts max. Some wire wound resistors dissipate the excess power and the meter survives.
