Look at the Printed section board circuit. A ground plane can contribute in limiting noise and distortion due to external interferences AND internal thermal noise (Ground having 0 resistance instead of a trace having a really small resistance). In general, you can make the ground as everything that not a trace, instead of non conductive material.
