I remember reading, when Adobe first started, that he wanted to have a universal standard for document exchange, unlike the many proprietary formats used such as Word, WordPerfect, Framemaker, etc.
I think he largely succeeded.
The smart thing was to make the the PDF reader free, but charge for the software to make the PDF document.

And before that was Postscript which made laser printers able to beautifully reproduce what was seen on the screen. He contributed a lot to society during his time with us.
