Can you tell me what these 7 round things are in the base of this alternator.
There is one that is hooked to the housing. The other 6 were hooked up to the 3 windings leads. Two were hooked to each one. 3 are in the housing and 3 are on plate in the base of the housing. Looks like it might be insulated from rest of housing. I am scavenging the windings from this alternator for a project and was trying to understand what it is that they do. Thx

 

They are Rectifiers to convert AC to DC. One set for Field winding, the other for Load.

So if I was to use permanent magnets I would not need field rectifiers, correct?

Wrong. The voltage generated in any generator is AC.
If your requirement is AC, use it as such. If you need DC, you need to use Rectifiers to conver the AC to DC.
