Can synchronous motor generate ac voltage in absence of dc voltage to the rotor??

In a lab experiment, the synchronous generator's rotor was devoid of all dc excitation but still we got 3 phase ac voltage on the stator. My question is why ?? Is it because of residual magnetism ??

Thanks...

Yes, residual magnetism, this is is often the way many wound rotor field generators, DC & AC, are started without any external excitation, after starting the generator itself provides the excitation.
