    HI,
I want to work out the rating of a transformer which has 230V variac

(do you divide the kva value by the volt value to give amps?)

    Thanks

With a Variac you divide the KVA rating by the input voltage (230V in this case) to get the output current rating, not what the output voltage happens to be set at. This means the maximum output current is independent of the output voltage setting.
