can someone suggest a good book on higher algebra.. something apart from "hall and knight".
What topics are you refering to when you say 'Higher Algebra'?
complex nos., permutation combinations, probability, sequences and series(all types- diverging, converging, log, exponential, telescoping etc), binomial thm for any index, theory of equations (quadratic and all), misc equations, number theory
i think thats about it
Try Engineering Mathematics by K.A Stroud
It will provide you with a decent step through from first principles to general solutions, with an emphasis on application rather than derivation.
The only topics I cannot remember being a part of this text is permutation combinations, and Number Theory is not tackled as an individual topic, though this may have changed in recent editions.
If you are looking for a text that places emphasis on derivation from first principles, you are probably better investing in a Pure Mathematics textbook.
