Biasing Elect Micrphone

The one thing that always confused me when using elect micrphone is how to properly bias them. Can anyone explain how to accomplish this?

An electret microphone uses 500uA at a few volts. 9V through a series 10k resistor works well.
3V through a series 3k resistor reduces the output level to about half.
