begginner that needs stepper motor help

Hi everyone,

I have this stepper motor controller:

for use with a few stepper motors I got from an online robot parts supply store. The problem is that I have NO IDEA how to program the stepper motors. The controller board has a serial port interface so I can plug it into a computer, and I know how to connect the motors to the controller board, but after that I am lost. I have a bit of experience with C.

Here are a few questions that I have:

Can I use C to program the motors? (I need to control three motors simultaneously)

Can I interface a PIC18F42 to the parallel port so that I do not have to have the controller board plugged into a computer?

WHERE do I start??? Thank you in advance for any advice that you give.
