I'm a total noob to electronics but what I'm trying to do is set a circut up that when the loop is closed it will light up an wireless LED circut prefferably through an RF signal as IR has the drawback up line of sight and distance. I'm looking for this to work for max distance (up to a few hundred feet). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know what this means. Do you mean you want to press a button and have that - wirelessly via RF - light up an LED up to 100 ft away?

This would require a transmitter and a receiver. If you're thinking of building your own, this is a fairly ambitious project for a beginner. If you plan on re-tasking an old walkie-talkie set, it gets more practical.
