Can you help me find a good source of the instructions for programming AVRs in C?
I am talking for something like the "C Reference Manual" for PICs.

Have you taken a look at the manual that comes with the free WINAVR download from www.sourceforge.net? The filename is avr-libc-user-manual.pdf.

and for the rest the datasheets of the part and the application notes at Atmel's website are great source of knowledge after you become familiar with the basics. And also keep the libc documentation handy!
