I'd like to edit or make my own avatar and i wanted to know how big in length times width and what is the max file size allowed in kilobytes?

From the User Control Panel - Edit Avatar selection - "Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller)."

For the record, the profiles picture (UserCP > Edit Profile Picture) is limited to 100x100 pixels and 64kB. Slightly bigger because it is typically a photo.
