Everyone has seen those tutorials on how to create a benchtop power supply out of an old computer power supply. There are many possible voltage combinations one can get from 12, 5, 3.3, -5, and -12 V. It seems to me though some of them are bad ideas because some of the sources that are meant to supply current are sinking it. Such as 12-5=7 V. That has current flowing out of 12 and into 5. Isn't that in general a bad idea with this kind of power supply?

I'm thinking combinations like 12-(-12) = 24 V should be OK. Or is this bad too?
