What are the functional and architectural differences between a peripheral and a function (feature) of a microcontroller?

Functional - what does one do that the other does/can not?

Architectural - Very long topic. Start with Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_architecture. Note that it does not apply as well to peripherals.
