I'm a total newb so please be gentle with my potentially dumb question...

Does anyone know if it's possible to calibrate a simple short range RF detector to pick up a small RF signal from a specific small transmitter? Figuring out the distance between transmitter and detector is the key here. If it is possible, what components would you imagine necessary to build it? BTW, I got the idea from this product....

I think you need a RF field strenght meter.
Here is a DIY one, uncalibrated, but it gives an indication:
