UPDATE: received the 5K Ω pot, with 45º rotation, installed it and we're back in business.
Thanks to all w/their suggestions and advice. I didn't know that there was pots available w/less than ~300º rotation.

Just to follow up.
Don't know much about electronics but my friend has a Bladez DKS 200 that he bought new. The original pot (speed control) was B30K.
