Saying "multimeter" means it has multiple functions..one of those is typically a current meter.. Did you mean multimeter or volt meter.
Read the front.. Does it show an A~ at one section along the dial..

A simple meter might not be equipped for current at all, while a more comprehensive one probably would measure both AC and DC current. You would really have to refer to the particular meter's specifications - or the meter itself.

If your meter doesn't have AC Amps, or if the range is too low, there's another alternative. Insert a small ohmic resistor into the wire carrying the current. The value should be so small it won't affect the operation of the circuit ( fractional ohm resistors are available with good tolerances ) Then just use the AC volts function and ohm's law to determine the current.
