Hello,

What are the advantages/disadvantages of using FPGAs? Comparing to microcontrollers for example (8,16 or 32bit).

Are FPGAs used in industry or are they used just for simulation or educational purposes?

Speed. Parallel operations. Flexibility. Those are just several of many advantages.

Of course, they are widely used in many industrial and commercial applications. Educational use alone will not support the scale of current FPGA market/industry.

1)Reprogrammable HARDWARE..
2)Supports parallel processing(so finds application in VLSI signal processing)
3)Optimization(if u want a 10-bit microcontroller 4 ur application u can design ur own)
4)laboratory prototyping

apart from these in our lab at IITMadras we need several digital circuits for our Haptics and mannequin project...what we r doing is we r implementing all the digital circuits in a single FPGA board, which saved us lots of time as well as hardware and cost and improved efficiency of our system

hope this is enough...
