AC Current measure

Dear all..
I would like to place an ac power meter in my old circuit So Please help me to know :
- Can I put transformer at as fig 1.
Because my old circuit not have place to put transformer at as fig 2 .Thank you so much in advance for your time.

I would ask you "Does AC current flow through that conductor?" That is the question. If it does then you certainly can. The transformer you have depicted does not impact the circuit of the wire passing through it except to consume a minute amount of power due to the magnetic coupling.

The main advantage of a Current Transformer is the isolation it provides. It can be placed either on the Line side or Neutral side of the load.

However, its output is an ac voltage proportional to the load current, so if you want to feed it to an A/D converter or other dc circuit, you must rectify and filter it...
