It works with AC and cannot work with DC because it is designed like that. The compressor motor is an AC motor.

 

If you want, you can replace the compressor with a DC version. Just make sure it has the same specs for the refrigerant the unit is using.

By the way, don't do it. It would cost more in the parts you would need then to buy a new DC version.

You would need a recovery system to get the old refrigerant out of the unit and into a tank. (You can't just let it go into the air. VERY VERY BAD.)

You then need to cut out the old compressor, braze in the new, check for leaks.

Then you need a vacuum pump to get all the air and moisture out of the refrigerant lines.

Then you need special gauges to refill the unit with refrigerant to the proper levels.

Buy a DC-ready refrigerator or use a DC to AC inverter to run it off DC.
