The numbers on the left side represent the rows.
Since we don't have access to the book, it's difficult for us to tell which needs to be connected to what shift register, or if the rows or the columns are supposed to have the cathodes/anodes of the display.

Right now, the cathodes are the columns, anodes the rows.

If they were reversed, I would think that you would get no output at all.

Ok I finally have some good news! I uploaded a different piece of code and it worked perfectly, meaning that i have FINALLY wired up the dot matrix correctly. The issue was that I connected the rows and columns the wrong way.

The only thing that confuses me is that all I get is the top row of leds flashing on and off when uploading the code that was attached. It means that the code is wrong because the only thing that has been changed is the code...It just seems strange that chejian6 was able to get it working with the exact code...

You may have a different display than was used in the book.

Like I've been saying, I don't have the book, nor access to the original source code.
