A similar question to this was asked a few years ago, but without getting the reply that I need.

Can someone please post a method of experimentally determining the pinout of the 2N3819 ? (Or even JFETs generally ?)

I just feel better if I can check it myself first, rather than blow the thing up, as in one place I read that incorrect connection can destroy a JFET.

I'm fond of datasheets. but you can use an ohmmeter. Move the leads around until you get a diode indication. If you don't know what that looks like, try it on a diode first.
For an N-channel JFET, the red lead will be on the gate, and the black lead will be on the source or drain. Source and drain are interchangeable on almost all JFETs.
A P-channel will be the same, but with the leads swapped.
