I have a project I'm working on that uses a potentiometer turned via linkage mechanism to capture the movement of a swivel mechanism. Imagine a 2 foot flat bar with a pivot point in the middle that swings a about 45 degrees in either direction. I'd like to convert it to use a hall effect sensor but I'm unsure of what type of hall effect sensor to use and how to mount it and a magnet to capture the motion. Pretty sure I need a linear analog Hall sensor, it'll be replacing a pot that runs off 5 volts.

Unlike a potentiometer, designing for linear hall effect sensors is complicated. You will almost certainly need to integrate the output of more than one, and you will have to take into account the field strength of the magnet(s) you use.
