I'm not very experienced with low voltage wiring but here it goes.

I have a round baler with an electric tie mechanism. I want to be able to build a setup that will let me push a button and it will run through its cycle on its own. Right now I use a DPDT switch to run it. The cycle I would like it to run is as follows:
1. motor runs approximately 8 seconds, pauses 5 seconds
2. motor switches polarity and either slowly returns back or goes on ,off, on, off approximately 10 times
3. motor switches polarity runs two seconds, pauses 5 seconds
4. motor switches poality runs three seconds, back to home position

thank you for your time, sorry for the poor terminology

duseknic,

The baler cycle isn't a matter of time but of external sensors. I haven't worked on round balers but, althought it's been awhile, I have worked on rectangual balers for paper, card stock and or corrugated paper products. It would be most useful to have or be able get the baler specifications.

U would require sensors to sense ends. And if traveling distance is not important u can use a programmable chip to time the run cycles.

If the distance traveled is important u will need positions sensors thru out.

We need more info on ur machine. As I am not familiar a "baler"

This piece of farm equipment is used for storing hay to feed cattle. It picks up hay which is compacted into a round shape by spinning belts. When it is full the string mechanism(which I'm trying to build ) wraps twine around it to hold it in shape. The distance isn't a big issue because this motor has a clutch on it, and isn't very feasible to put sensors on the baler itself.

1. motor runs approximately 8 seconds, pauses 5 seconds
2. motor switches polarity and either slowly returns back or goes on ,off, on, off approximately 10 times
3. motor switches polarity runs two seconds, pauses 5 seconds
4. motor switches poality runs three seconds, back to home position

Questions:
How is home position determined? Is there a switch?

2. motor switches polarity and either slowly returns back or goes on ,off, on, off approximately 10 times
Is this step at a reduced speed?
Must this step return to home, or is some minimum amount
of movement in the opposite direction adequate?

Is this the cycle?

1. Motor starts at home position.
2. Motor runs forward 8 seconds.
3. Dwell 5 seconds.
4. Motor runs reverse at low speed to home position.
5. Motor runs forward 2 seconds.
6. Dwell 5 seconds.
7. Motor runs reverse to home position.

How much money, realistically, are you looking to spend?

How much time do you have?

One problem you will encounter is going to be the environment
that the unit will be operated in. Dusty, wet on occasion, hot,
vibration, etc...

There currently are no switches on the baler to sense ends. When the twine arms get back to their home position they hit metal stops and the motor clutches out.
That is the correct sequence except in step 4 it cannot return all the way home, because it would cut the string. The reason for running back and forth is to double the string up so it doesn't unravel as easy.
I was hoping to be able to get it done for under $250.
I do have some time to play around with it.
Thank you

With that price in mind, I would be looking for
a "mini PLC", "micro PLC", "programmable relay" or "smart relay".
This device could be programmed to output to a couple of relays
that is controlling the forward/reverse operation of the motor.

The reason for the multiple search terms above is different
manufacturers have different descriptions and I wanted to
give enough terms to be able to compare.

The cost for the unit should be ≈$100, but would allow
you to have a lot of control over the sequence, plus the
ability to change operation as needed in the future.

Take a look, if you have any questions post them here.

Maybe some one else has another idea.

For clarity corrected sequence:

1. Motor starts at home position.
2. Motor runs forward 8 seconds.
3. Dwell 5 seconds.
4. Motor runs reverse at reduced speed ___seconds.
5. Dwell ___seconds.
6. Motor runs forward 2 seconds.
7. Dwell 5 seconds.
8. Motor runs reverse to home position stop.

Does this seem correct?

That sequence looks perfect. I will try finding that relay now. Thank you for your help if I need more I will re-post. Thanks again.
