This is a very basic question, but I figured I would ask because I am not sure of the answer. Is it possible to use an automotive 12 volt relay to switch a 9 volt power source?


What I want to do is, use a normal +12v signal to trigger the relay. However, instead of having it trigger a higher amp 12 volt, I need it to trigger a 9 volt battery to power my device. So, overall the question is, can I use a 12v relay, triggered by a 12 volt signal, to switch on a 9v power circuit? Thanks

Voltage ratings are usually the maximum safe voltage.

 

Yes. The relay coil rating is independent of the contact rating. And you can always switch a lower voltage with the contacts than the relay's rating.
