ATMEL inside of PICKit3

I found this rather interesting.

I was playing around with a PICKIT3 and noticed a little something.

(I know Microchip tried to aquire ATMEL, but I didn't think they would USE there products in there production pieces.)

The PICKIT3 uses an ATMEL 25DF041A at position 'U4'.





Now why would they use an ATMEL part that they also produce?
Not only that, but they use the MICROCHIP version of memory at position U3.

Atmel in bed with Microchip, I sense a new Profumo scandal here The 25DF041A is no doubt a chip equivalent of Christine Keeler
The reason could also be, as far as I know Microchip do not have any serial flash that big. So they went outside the house to find one. And the Atmel was the cheapest one.

These decisions are based entirely on supply and demand economics. For all we know the dice for both manufacturers parts may come off the same fab line only to be private labeled for both Microchip and Atmel.

by the way....how much is that. I was hoping to buy pickit2 when I got the project. Is this one better?

I would buy the 2 or the 3... If you have not used either, you will love either.

You should be able to get one for $40 to $45.

I can put one in the next package I send to you when you need more parts.

Are You sure about the hand model. An ICD 3 might be better in the long run. But if the PIC projects occur seldom perhaps a PICKIT 3 is enough. The ICD 3 is better then it comes to debugging.

What are the difference between ICD3 and the PICKIT 3. Debugging is what we need that for, am I right.?
After all I do have a programmer, the step by step functions is the thing that helps to debug the uC operation.

You can also still pick a PICKIT 2 cheap. A PICKIT 2 will not support newer chips from Microchip. But the list of supported processors are in most cases more than good enough also for the future. Sexy hand! I'm imagining they needed it for the Programing To Go feature to hold the code.

Of coarse but thats like saying I would of bought the Ferrari instead of the Schwinn. If I was gonna go for the ICD3 for debugging I'd go the extra mile and just get the Realice. You have 4 levels of programmers and debuggers from Microchip.

1. Pickit 2/3 - $40 Economy programmer/debugger for entry level programming
2. ICD 2/3 - $200 Prosummer programmer/debugger with more breakpoints and debug options.
3. RealIce - $500 Professional programmmer/debugger, with even more breakpoints and debug features then the ICD3.
4. PM3 - $800 This is a professional Programmer that allows you to stock code on SD cards and program what ever you need at that time. Its stand alone and doesn't require a computer. Its recommended for production programming of final chips.

These prices are just what I remember and could be off be a little bit.

From the comparison I was so eager to buy the real ice one and when I saw the price tag.

I think I will stick with a pickit 3 for now. it will do for now.
But who knows, when I get the money, sometimes it pours and with it comes a huge drain pipe .
I might get the real ice. Just may be.
