I have built a simple rectifier circuit with 4 1N4001 dioades. When I put 14 volts and 3.5 amps through it it gets very hot very quickly. What is the problem? There is no capacitor or resistor in the circuit, just the 4 diodes.

 

The 1N4001 is only rated for 1A maximum!

use 1
N4003 or more amp capabilities...

The 1N4003 has only a higher voltage capability.
For higher current an other range of diodes must be used, like the BYW80 series.
