Do you have control of the explosion? If so use cap-break sensing. If a flash & heat are produced, IR should work, with detector well shaded & small angle focus.

 

Accelerometer? Are you close enough to measure the vibration the explosion will induce?

Completely independent of light.

 

eng1ne, any decent explosion should be recordable with a geophone. Travel would be faster than thru air. Do'nt have a geophone- glue two or more nickels to center of 45 ohm speaker, use small spring to pull cone back to normal position,speaker horizontal,attach three legs to rim to rest on ground. Amplify signal with OP-amp.
