So is there anyway to reduce the amp output or adding a volume pot on the input line is the only way?

Homes, restaurants and PA systems use a pretty big tapped transformer at each speaker to adjust its volume. Audio-video stores sell them mounted on an electrical switch plate. They have a switch that selects about 10 volume levels.
