It's one those threads like member ship level kinda huh!

At least decide who you are putting.

I say this cause a few stays. So tell me what matters ?
umm... say what?

If it was opt -in, or did not show member names, would that solve privacy issues?
that was kind my thought, have a map users can put a flag on if they want too.
or I could do it manually with paint...
(not sure if I'm willing to put that much work into it) :p

For the time being, the admins don't really have the time to tweak the site.

But even if that was the case, we wouldn't want to publish any private information of the users on the site. Any info you read, you do because the said user has posted it, nothing is extracted without his consent.
That proves really helpful when events of racism (few, but still there) appear.

Posting where you are from helps, but is not mandatory in AAC.

You asked and it was given:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=204370864618154743986.0004b9121e2c3a552853b

This is a Google map. It is unlisted and open for editing. The former means that it cannot be searched upon the net. Only people with this URL can look it up. The latter means that everyone who ends up in this map can edit its details.
I leave it on the AAC members to treat it responsibly.

Instructions:

For those who have Gmail account:

Once you click the URL, you will be linked to the map. There, you can see the user locations.

  • To add your location, first create a pin on the location you want. It is strongly recommended that you do not post your exact address, but the general center of your city.In order to do that, in the search bar on the top of the page, search for your city/location. The default result location will appear as a red pin on your map, and the screen will be zoomed in it.
  • Left click on the red pin; a pop up menu appears. Select Save to map. Select the AAC Members Network map and click Save. That step saved the marker into the map.
  • Finally, go to the My Places tab, on the left on your screen and select the AAC Members Network map. Click edit. Find the pin you just added and click it. On the map, the pin will now be editable. Edit its title to add your username. I suggest the pattern Username - City, Country for uniformity.
For those who do not have a Gmail account:

Post your location in this thread and we will update the map for you.

That's about it. If you have questions on the process or corrections, post them.

Do you think I should sticky this? Who should update the map for those with no Gmail accounts? Anyone? A designated person? We could try to update it as a group at first.

Thanks georacer :)
I think stickying this is a great idea so it's seen by joining members :)
I'll go ahead and add the map and instructions to the first post.
As for keeping it updated I can go ahead and add all the users on the list right now, and then update it whenever I add someone to the list.
This would also allow the mods to add people to the list and edit it if I don't check for awhile.

@Magnet

Have you considered using tables for the members' list under each country? It would allow for automatic sorting, either by city or username.

The thought just occurred to me when I was considering how to keep track of who is and isn't on the map.

I'll probably go through and change it when I get time, did you mean the standard [ TABLE ] tags, or something more advanced?

The
tag. Check here for an example: http://forum.allaboutcircuits.com/showpost.php?p=437018&postcount=15

and the table code:

Basically look a bit at the header line.
Each line is a table line

I would like to note that any pins with invalid usernames will be deleted.

The offtopic section is visible to visitors too. If we have too much interference we 'll have to think of something. I have a few ideas.

Aaaand the map will be locked 5 hours after its creation. Spam appeared already.

I will grant Magnet18 permissions to edit it. If another mod or member feels up to the task of up keeping it, ask me for a permission mail.

So I take it you liked the idea. Why don't you include a column for the Country too? And drop the On Map. We 'll keep it updated anyway.

Did you take the collaboration mail I sent you? Don't update the map for now. I have a friend of mine working on some sorting code for a while. I 'll tell you when he 's done.
