Some threads have stars, some dont. I just realized that I can give a thread a star. Why would I? What do the stars indicate? Does it mean the thread is of high quality? Like if someone posts a link to great reference, I give it a star? What if I give the thread a star, and then the discussion goes south, can I retract it?

I just gave this thread 5 stars, I want everyone else to give it only one.

Ha! it rounds up. I still have 3, despite your effort to bring me down to 2.5!

I also figured out how to give it one star.
That should average it down to 2...I think.

No. It was whacked down to 1 star.

Thanks gerty. It's going to take a sledgehammer to get it back down to 1

Yup, with a queen and everything. The USA is a republic. Neither is quite a pure democracy, though they are definitely democracies.

Problem with the USA, we have the best congress money can buy.

They are purchased with money alright, but I would disagree with your statement, 'the best'.

Mediocre is more like it. :)

Don't even get me STARTED on congress!!!

If "con" is the opposite of "pro", what is "congress" the opposite of?

The truest democracy are those little town hall meetings in Vermont (or maybe New Hampshire) where the town votes on the budget. It was an annual meeting the last I've seen of them.

That would be my best example of a true democracy.

Hi Joe, I happen to be a part of that (I'm a Vermonter, you know), and I can tell you that it's not as "perfect" as it seems. A majority of the town population is misinformed, if at all, by a select few "esteemed" citizens or other unreliable sources. However, I would agree that it is the truest democracy you'll get, considering how the rest of the country works!
