    It's a momentary pushbutton switch.

They're commonly known as a SPST tactile switch.

Radio Shack does stock them, but you would not want to buy 12 of them at $3.99/each.

Mouser sells a very similar switch for $0.26 each:

$3.12+ shipping vs $47.88 is pretty attractive.

The lead spacing isn't quite right for standard 0.1" perfboard hole spacing, but you can make them fit if you're careful.

As far as the design, you could make it more compact. Right now, you have:
    COM
    (unused)
    1
    2
    3
    (com)
    (unused)
    4
    5
    6
    ....etc...

Instead, you could wire it as:
    COM
    2
    1
    3
    (com)
    5
    4
    6
    ...etc...
    Just an idea.

Yes, it would - but why not use the multiplexed keyboard to simplify your wiring, and where you need the discrete signals use a demultiplexer IC?
