I can remember picking up some hitchhikers in the desert. I was in a GMC pickup at the time

As they got in they said

"You must be British"

"Why", I asked

"Only the British stop for hitchhikers"

So much for

"Standing on the turnpike
Thumb out to hitchhike
Take her to New York right away"

 

Should've lived the hobo experience and jumped on a train.

A group of us kids used to do this all the time when we were 10 - 14 years old in central Minnesota. We just jumped on near the school bus stop if a train was passing - then we rocked back and forth for about 3 miles to the candy store in in the next town. I scared the crap out of myself one day when a real hobo was already on the car I jumped on. I turned around and jumped right back off.
