What is the purpose of the peak gate reverse voltage (VGRM) rating of an SCR?

VGRM...Volts Gate Reverse Maximum

This is the voltage measured from the gate to the Kathode. SCR's only work one way, so positive voltage on the gate is good. Negative voltage has a limit. The limit is VGRM. Do not make a design that exceedes the maximum reverse voltage from gate to kathode.
