Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor.

MOSFETs are one side of it, you take two different polarity MOSFET transistors, scale them down until they will operator at 2V, and make a simple inverter out of them using two transistors. From there you can make a wide variety of gates. Since the geometry is fairly small they are really efficient to use.

 

The "CMOS Cookbook" by Don Lancaster is what I am learning from. They used to be available cheap on Amazon but I see the prices have shot way up. Guess I better keep better care of mine, I've used my "TTL Cookbook" until it's fallen to pieces. Bought both at a local flea market.
