I was trying to do a little soldering in my garage today.

It seemed the iron was cycling on an off.

I turned it all the way up, and it wouldn't melt the solder.

I believe this has a rheostat inside, can that be cleaned?

The temperature in the garage was about 60=65 degrees.
Does the cool weather affect the ability of the iron to melt the solder?

I cleaned the tip repeatedly, and not much improvement.

I just put a new tip on it a couple of weeks ago, and it was working fine.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

On Ebay, they sell pocket oscilloscopes anywhere from $35.00 to $200.00

For a novice, would an inexpensive one be a good purchase?

Just as a leaning device, (although I have had large ones in the past, and I do know a little bit about them).

Is the small screen an issue?
    Are there any other concerns?

I don't have much workspace, so I thought one of these might work.

    Thanks

If the soldering iron has an electronic temperature controller with a "trimpot inside" you should be able to diagnose it with a multimeter (which I assume you have?).

If you post some good photos of the control PCB and the wiring it will really help people trying to help you.

Re the little ebay DSO-nano type 'scopes, they can be excellent compared to no 'scope at all. I think the latest Nano can be bought around $60? I doubt that you would regret that purchase, even if you buy a large 'scope later to do high frequency work.
