Weird LED Behavior... any explanations?

The chewing gum that holds the LED die on the leads of the cheap LED causes poor contact when the LED gets warm.

Have you ever seen the inside of a counterfeit power transistor? Lots of chewing gum.
Yeah, I've also heard that the magic smoke slowly corrodes the chewing gum, and this can cause failure in older components.

Sounds about right, though: overheating of the LED itself causing the junction or connections to temporarily open.

I think the case is closed. Thanks again for all the input.
