An accelerometer might work. You need to provide more details about what you need. Is it barrel direction, trigger position, safety status, etc?

Weight detector → Voltage comparator + Vref → Transistor → Relay → Alarm device

Weight(or position) detector is made from:
Wood, or board, or woodboard, Spring, Potentiometer(VR), reference voltage Vref.

When the gun is put on the woodboard, because the VR is set under the woodboard, so the VR will moving down to the lower position, the position is a low voltage as Vin, when the comparator compare with Vref, then the comparator will output a Low signal, the transistor doesn't work, and the relay will be off.

When the gun is took away from the woodboard, the VR will moving up to the higher position, the position is a higher voltage as Vin, when the comparator compare with Vref, then the comparator will output a high signal, the transistor will going to work, and the relay will work too, and the alarm will be actived.

It just an idea, you may modify to suit your need, as the woodboard can be a special box, and the whole detector put into the box.

How about a board, a spring, and a microswitch?
"Taken off from a specific position" isn't easy to understand.
How far off?
