Go to Home Depot, they sell them for about $35. Most foundation levelers since Greco-Roman times use a most efficient method using just a tube with water.

    labby,

I think the first step, before you get into schematics, is to define the details:
Water level in what: a tube, a tank, a river?
Indicating what: high/low, several discrete levels, continous range?
Indicating how: LEDs, LCD, analog meter, internet link?
Alarming when? Full, near full, near empty, empty?

Otherwise...its a battery, a float switch, a microcontroller, and a buzzer. And the microcontroller isn't needed...it's only in there because it was called for in the assignment. ;)
