My 8 year old son would like to make a project where a fan would start up to cool his pet if the temperature was to rise to a certain level. I am NOT an engineer and have no clue how to do this. Help is certainly welcome!

Your son should be made aware that if his pet is a furry 4-legged critter, they get their cooling by "panting", or rapidly inhaling/exhaling air; and the evaporation of moisture from their mouth/throat.

Such furry critters must always have plenty of fresh, clean water available, as well as fresh air.

There must also be plenty of room for the critter to get out of the fans' air stream if they do not wish for it to blow on them; otherwise they may be very upset about it. In keeping with this thought, the fan should not be placed in a manner whiere it blows air or creates noise near the critters' sleeping or eating areas. Allow them to demonstrate that they want the fan to blow on them, just by the fact that they stay in front of it for no other reason than it is moving air.

Make certain that the fan is placed so that they cannot reach into the moving fan blades, nor chew on any part of the fan or wiring.

If this project is to be used outside, that opens a whole 'nother can of worms. You can't simply run an extension cord and power it with a "wall wart" or plug supply, as that would cause electrical safety and trip hazards.
