Using RF to determine proximity

    Is it possible to us RFID tags as a way to tag/mark a specific item, then use an RF reader to determine the proximity of that item? For example, could you put a unique (passive or semi-passive) RFID tag on your keychain, then "find" your keys with a handheld reader (determining proximity) much the same way a metal detector will help you zero in on a piece of metal?
