See it rather that way- these chips were old technology when the PICKIT2 was new. So they did not add support for them.
The things you can do with 1K are limited.
Then it was added to PICKIT firmware for completeness sake.
String tables for 16f5x don't work right with the Hitech C, don't know if this is now fixed. The MPLAB simulator (XC8) still does not actually work on most C programs. Compilation is correct.
