USB to LED driver interface

I am considering building a little 8x8 LED grid using a Max7221 IC. I have a much bigger grid in the works that uses RGB LEDs and is programmed via Arduino.

This grid is supposed to be much smaller and more portable so I'd prefer to have a USB connection right to the board. The LED drivers can be programmed by "SPI, QSPI, and Microwire as well as a conventional 4-wire serial interface." *(The 4-wire interface is LOAD, DIN, CLK, & GND)

I was looking at what the arduino uses which is an FT232R, USB UART IC. What would the best option be for a project like mine?

Thanks in advance.
