I want to run Ubuntu alongside OS X on my macbook pro. I have documents I cannot lose on OS X so I want to make sure I download it properly. I would like to run it off of an external hard drive but have not bought one yet. If anyone could give me advice on what I should do/get that would be great.

Can the Mac boot from the external device? If so, just put the live install on that device and you're done.

Yup. (But then again, I have no Mac experience.)

Probably. Just replace the words 'USB Stick' with 'your device'.

15.10 was released a day or so ago. There will be some fast and furious updates for the next few weeks as bug reports come in. There will probably be at least one point release of the live install at some point. If you are looking for stability, go with 15.04 or 14.04 LTS.

Ultimately, you will also want to install to your hard drive as a dual boot. At that point, stability will not be all that much an issue for you.
