    So i'm kinda curious.

So what does standby mode look like? When I turn a device off using a remote, does say the VCR switch to the standby circuit? Is a standby circuit basically within the main circuit but the standby functions are kept in one area? What does it look like in a circuit diagram?

If I wanted to turn a device off as if I were unplugging it, but I was still able to turn a device on with a remote control, how would that work? Power would still say go to the IR reciever/decoder/CPU/, but not the clock. What else would there have to be and what would it look like on a diagram?

Google has oodles of links. Try search terms like "SMPS standby", etc.
