I am new to electronics - on a transistor, is it required that the voltage feed to the Base is from the same power source (but reduced by a resistor) as the same power source that feeds the Collector (+) and the Emitter (-).

I wanted to have a 12 volt circuit feeding the C/E with a separate circuit (5 volt) feeding the base?

    Thanks

As long as the 5 volt supply shares the common with the 12 volts, there will be no problem. Just select the correct resistor to limit base current.
