actually i wanted to use a transistor a switch so that if i give some voltage to base pin then i can get connection between emitter and collector, so which transistor would work!!!!

Transistors come in more than one flavor, so there is no one way to do this - http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_3/chpt_4/2.html

Another thing to be careful about is the voltage across the transistor and the current through it.

Field effect transistors make good switches, too, by the way.

What do you want to switch and what is the control signal?
