This story has also reached Europa. In the discussion a person said that on a Toyota Prius. Both the transmission system and the motor start/stop system are electronic controlled. So you can not put the gearbox in "N" then the accelerator is operated, or the car is rolling. And the same will apply to the stop button as prius has a engine start and stop button. Is this true?
If any is interested in the answer to my question. A representant from the national Toyota office said on TV that the Toyota Prius may be put in (N)eutral at any time even if the accelerator is operated. And the engine in a Prius may be stopped at any time by operating the stop button for some time.
He also said the breaking power is larger than the engine power. So a runaway car should stop if the break pedal is operated continuously

Unless the runaway problem also effects the anti-lock brake system. Which could also explain the San Diego brake finding.

My thoughts exactly. If the onboard computer ignored or over-rode the application of brakes because the engine was running full bore, the driver could be "standing" on the brakes, pedal wise, and there would be no response, yet the driver would receive physical feedback indicating he was applying full braking power.
