Toshiba L305D-S5974
Did the basics. Battery out, no power 20 second reset, re-seat the RAM.
Plug it in:
Got power light.
Push "start" and the second light comes on. (whatever that means)
The fan runs.
The HDD clicks once. No. SOMETHING clicks once.
End of list.

No brightness on the screen. No sounds. No blinky lights.
Methinks it's the HDD but I came to ask...would that stop all displays whatsoever?

Take out the HDD and Ram. Battery out. Try to run from adapter.
Power UP you should hear RAM alarm beeping or some cases nothing. But there won't be any display.
Cut off power. Replace just RAM leave HDD out (one piece RAM only if you have more than 1).
Power up thru adapter only. Check if display comes. If not then other RAM piece and a new one if possible. If not display then try plugging in a monitor to the VGA port of the LAP to see if the VGA is initializing.
If display comes whether LCD or monitor you should be able to enter setup.

ps. On second thought keep a Monitor plugged in to VGA port of LCD. This way you will be sure what display is not initializing.

Dead, dead, and dead.
No beeping, no brightness on the Lappy screen OR the Hewlett Packard flat screen plugged in to the 15 pin connector. Not even a, "Shutting off" message on the extra display when I unplug the Lappy.

I got plenty of both.

So how is your RAM terminals ?
Are they dirty ?
Use a pencil erasure to clean the RAM terminals. Just rub it until the terminals shine. Clean both sides gently until they shine

You already done that EH !
Shudda told me #12.....still if the RAM cannot be checked there is no other way unless you have what I have, a laptop POST checker thingy...!
If the RAM is OK then you have to send it to me. :D

CLUNK ???? thought I told you to take out the HDD. too many clunks and you will end up with a permanent clunking drive.

Laptops are fairly simple to diagnose when they refuse to boot.
  1. Take out the HDD, test it
  2. Take out the RAM, test it
  3. Still nothing showing on screen?, Dial 911

Yes, I followed instructions. No HDD inside.
One RAM, 2 RAM, no change.
One fan, one clunk, no blinking, no beeping, no brightness.
Time to tell relatives their $150 Lappy is not worth fixing.

I should have used it for a Frisbee, yesterday.

Not a clue. Postage to halfway around the world???
Are you still above sea level?
Global warming people keep telling us we're all going to die...soon!
I'll just check with you. When you can't get your feet dry, I will start worrying.

I work for an IT support organization and discussed this with the "guys".

First, they say the problem is that its a Toshiba laptop :D

Shame!! speak no ill about Thoshiba's... at least a few years ago they were the best quality laptops you could find...
to be honest, I don't know much about lappy brands anymore... I own a Dell, and had an HP previous to that one... I like the Dell better

I phoned the local computer geek. He said $150 and it's going to live. I gave him the Lappy and the owners phone number.

Glad to see the end of that charade!
